Best Mass Building Workout Routines

When first starting out everyone, be it a hardgainer, athlete or just a kid with aspirations of becoming bodybuilder jacked, start out by looking for mass building workout routines that they can follow. Well, as an academic, personal trainer and fitness writer, I always advocate learning the science and theory behind bodybuilding and training methods instead of blindly implementing them in the gym just because someone else said it works (A place for beginners to start is How to set up a hardgainer workout routine) But, getting deep into the science takes a while and will come over time by staying interested in fitness and learning as much as you can. For the time being, it’s definitely easier to find a proven mass building method developed by an expert and follow it to see quicker results. So, instead of writing another article that tries to explain everything, I’m just going to link out to a few of the best mass building workout routines developed by bodybuilders and other experts in the fitness industry.

Note: I numbered the list, but there isn’t really a ranking system in place here. All of these routines were developed by people that are considered by many to be the leading experts in mass building.

Mass Building Workout Routine #1: Jim Stoppani’s 12-Week Shortcut To Size

Jim Stoppani has a Phd in exercise physiology and has been a personal consultant for celebrities such as LL Cool J, Dr. Dre, Dwayne “The Rock Johnson and many more. Not many people, outside the celebrity and bodybuilding circles, know about him but he has definitely proven his ability to help his clients pack on muscle.

Jim is all about periodization and changing up uyour training in order to maximize muscle gains. With this 12 week program, you begin with hypertrophy training, which implements low weights and high reps, and progress towards a maximum strength phases, which involves heavier weights and low reps. Multiple cycles of these phases keeps muscles confused and constantly adapting, aka growing.

You can check out more about his workout program here: Jim Stoppani’s 12-Week Shortcut To Size

Mass Building Workout Routine #2: Jay Cutler Workout Routine

Jay Cutler has won the Mr. Olympia title 4 times and is a legend among bodybuilders. His workout routine consists of pure hypertrophy training and will help pack on size. This workout may be a little intense for beginners though. Make sure you can handle this before you jump right in. If it is too difficult though, I recommend cutting out a few of the isolation lifts and focus on just doing the compound movements with the sets and reps he recommends.

Mass Building Workout Routine #3: Arnold Schwarzenegger

I know this last link is to AskMen.com, but it’s a great workout nonetheless. Arnold is considered a god among men by those in the fitness community. He actually laid a lot of the foundation for what is now modern day bodbyulding. If there was one guy you should listen to about putting on mass, it should be the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Check it out the Arnold Schwarzenegger workout here. You have to go to the third page to actually see the workout.

If you haven’t already seen it, I highly recommend you watch Pumping Iron. The documentary follows Arnold and a few other bodybuilders, including Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk), as they prepare for the 1975 Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe competitions.

Here’s the trailer. Enjoy!
